Safe, Professional Skin Tag Removal Using Advanced Electrolysis
Skin tags are one of the most common benign skin lesions we treat at Jems Health & Beauty. Although they are harmless, many people choose to have them removed because they catch on clothing or jewellery, become irritated when shaving, or simply affect their confidence.

We offer professional skin tag removal using Advanced Electrolysis from our clinic in Whitefield, Manchester. Every treatment begins with a thorough consultation to assess the lesion, answer your questions and ensure it is suitable for cosmetic removal.

Your safety is always our priority. As part of our consultation process, we also offer our Map My Mole service. This involves a detailed consultation, clinical photography and dermatoscopic imaging of the lesion. All information is then securely sent to a consultant dermatologist for review and diagnosis, with results typically returned within 24–48 hours. This allows us to ensure your lesion has been professionally assessed before proceeding with any cosmetic treatment.

Whether you’re from Whitefield, Prestwich, Bury, Radcliffe, Swinton, Heywood, Middleton or the surrounding areas, we’re here to provide honest advice and professional care.

What Is a Skin Tag?
A skin tag, also known by its medical name acrochordon, is a small, soft, harmless growth of skin. They are extremely common and can vary in size from just a few millimetres to several centimetres.

Skin tags are usually flesh coloured or slightly darker than your natural skin tone and often develop in areas where the skin rubs together.

Although they are medically harmless, they can become uncomfortable or catch on clothing, jewellery and razors. Many people simply choose to have them removed because they don’t like the way they look.

What Causes Skin Tags?

The exact cause of skin tags isn’t fully understood, but they are thought to develop due to repeated friction on the skin.

They are more common:
-
As we get older
-
During pregnancy due to hormonal changes
-
In areas where skin rubs together
-
In people who are overweight
-
If there is a family history of skin tags
-
In people with certain medical conditions, including insulin resistance and diabetes
Skin tags are not caused by poor hygiene and they are not contagious.
Where Do Skin Tags Appear?

Skin tags most commonly develop on:
-
Neck
-
Underarms
-
Eyelids
-
Under the breasts
-
Groin
-
Chest
-
Back
These are all areas where there is regular friction from skin, clothing or movement.
Are Skin Tags Dangerous?

The vast majority of skin tags are completely harmless.
However, not every skin lesion is a skin tag.

For this reason, every client receives a consultation before treatment. Where appropriate, we may recommend our Map My Mole service to ensure the lesion has been reviewed by a dermatologist before cosmetic removal.

Your health and safety will always come before treatment.

Can I Remove a Skin Tag Myself?
Although there are many home removal kits and internet remedies available, we do not recommend attempting to remove a skin tag yourself.

Trying to cut, tie or burn a skin tag at home can lead to:
-
Bleeding
-
Infection
-
Scarring
-
Incomplete removal
-
Treating the wrong type of skin lesion
Professional assessment helps ensure the lesion is suitable for cosmetic treatment and that it is removed safely.
How Does Advanced Electrolysis Remove Skin Tags?
Advanced Electrolysis uses a very fine sterile probe to deliver a controlled electrical current to the base of the skin tag. In many cases, we can gently remove the skin tag using a heated needle which cauterises the area at the same time, helping to minimise bleeding. Alternatively, we may use a dehydration technique to safely break down the tissue.

Treatment is usually very quick, and many clients comment on how much faster the procedure is than they expected.

The exact technique used depends on the size and location of the skin tag and will always be explained during your consultation.

What Happens During My Consultation?
Before any treatment begins, we’ll carefully assess the skin tag and ask you a few questions about your medical history and the lesion itself.

We’ll explain:
-
How the treatment works
-
What results you can realistically expect
-
How the area is likely to heal
-
The aftercare you’ll need to follow
-
Any possible risks or side effects
This is also your opportunity to ask any questions. We want you to feel fully informed and confident before deciding whether to go ahead.
Does Skin Tag Removal Hurt?
This is one of the questions we’re asked most often. Most clients tell us the treatment is much more comfortable than they expected.

You may feel a brief sharp sensation during treatment, but because skin tags are usually removed very quickly, any discomfort is short-lived.

Everyone has a different pain threshold, but the majority of clients are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward the procedure is.

Will It Be Gone Straight Away?
In many cases, yes. The skin tag is often removed during the appointment itself. The treated area then begins its natural healing process.

Larger skin tags or certain locations may occasionally require an additional treatment, but this will be discussed during your consultation.

What Will It Look Like Afterwards?

Immediately after treatment, the area may appear slightly pink or red.

A small dry crust or scab often forms over the following days. This is a normal part of the healing process and helps protect the skin while new tissue forms underneath.

It is important not to pick the area, as this may delay healing and increase the risk of scarring. We’ll explain exactly what to expect before you leave the clinic.

How Long Does Healing Take?
Healing varies depending on the size and location of the skin tag, as well as your own natural healing response.
Most areas heal within a few weeks, although larger lesions may take a little longer. We’ll provide personalised aftercare advice based on your individual treatment.

Aftercare
Looking after the treated area properly gives your skin the best opportunity to heal beautifully.

After treatment we recommend:
-
Keeping the area clean and dry.
-
Avoiding picking or scratching any crust that forms.
-
Avoiding unnecessary friction while the area heals.
-
Following all aftercare advice provided during your appointment.
One of the most common mistakes we see is clients wearing tight clothing over the treated area too soon. Tight collars, bra straps or waistbands can repeatedly rub the area and slow the healing process, so where possible we recommend avoiding friction until the skin has fully healed.
Will the Skin Tag Come Back?

Once a skin tag has been successfully removed, it is unlikely to return in exactly the same place.
However, this doesn’t prevent your body from developing new skin tags elsewhere in the future.
If you notice any new skin tags developing, we’ll be happy to assess them during a consultation.

Questions Clients Ask Every Day

Can I Exercise or Go to the Gym?
We usually recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours, depending on the area treated. Exercise increases heat, perspiration and friction, which may irritate the healing skin. We’ll advise you based on the area you’ve had treated.
Can I Go Swimming?
We recommend avoiding swimming until the surface of the skin has healed. Swimming pools, hot tubs and open water can all increase the risk of irritation while the skin is healing. We’ll let you know when it’s appropriate to return to swimming following your treatment.
Will It Leave a Scar?
When aftercare advice is followed, most skin tags heal extremely well. As with any treatment that affects the skin, there is a small risk of scarring, but we use precise techniques designed to minimise this risk and will explain any factors that may affect your healing.

How long does treatment take?
Most individual skin tags can be treated in just a few minutes, although your appointment length will depend on how many lesions are being treated.

Can skin tags bleed?
Yes. Skin tags can bleed if they are caught, rubbed or accidentally cut, which is one of the reasons many people choose to have them removed.
Can I shower afterwards?
Yes. Shower as normal, but avoid perfumed shower gels or soaps on the treated area and gently pat it dry.
Can I wear make-up afterwards?
If the treated area is on the face, we usually recommend avoiding make-up until the skin has started to heal. However, we do stock Et Al make-up, which is specifically formulated for use after more invasive treatments, so if needed, we can advise you on suitable options.
Can several skin tags be treated in one appointment?
Yes, in many cases they can. This depends on the number, size and location of the skin tags and will be discussed during your consultation.
Jodie’s Advice
"One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that skin tags can’t be removed or that the treatment will be extremely painful. In reality, most clients are surprised by how quick and straightforward it is.
"The biggest mistake I see is people trying to remove skin tags themselves or wearing tight clothing over the treated area too soon. Friction can slow healing, so giving your skin time to recover is really important.
"My advice is always to have any skin lesion professionally assessed first. We also offer our Map My Mole service, where lesions can be reviewed by a dermatologist before treatment. Your safety will always come first.”
